Over time, factors such as pregnancy, nursing, weight loss and gravity can take their toll on the shape of the female breast. With age, skin loses its elasticity and the breasts begin to sag resulting in breast ptosis.
Mastopexy (breast lift) is a surgical procedure to lift and reshape ptotic breasts. This procedure raises the nipple and removes excess skin. Basically, the breast tissue is wrapped tighter in the patient’s remaining skin. This gives the breast a more attractive, lifted appearance. Mastopexy alone does not restore volume that may have been lost. This can only be achieved with breast augmentation using implants or fat grafting. Many patients benefit from a combination of mastopexy with breast augmentation or fat grafting.
This procedure repositions the nipple and areola giving the appearance that the breast has been lifted.
There are several incision options for reshaping and lifting the breast. The patient’s anatomy dictates which approach the surgeon will use. And the length and number of incisions is determined by the amount of skin excess. The saggier the breast, the longer the incisions to correct it.
Mastopexy is typically performed under general anesthesia in the GBSC.
Mastopexy is typically performed under general anesthesia in the GBSC. Our privately-owned surgery center is certified by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC). Your surgeon will discuss the facility and anesthesia options during your consultation.
Prior to discharge, you will recover for several hours in the surgical center and will need to have a companion drive you home. You will also be given an appointment to follow up with your surgeon a few days after the surgery.
The type of work you do will determine how soon you can return to regular job duties. You can resume all activities without restrictions in one month.
